It appears from this weeks Parsha that indeed we can.

At Har Sinai the Posuk tells us: Ve’Chol Ha’Om Royen Es Hakolos V’Es Halapeydim. Rashi Z”L explains that Bnei Yisroel  ‘Roiyen Es Hanishma”, they saw the sounds- that which is heard- the Aseres Hadibros emanating from Hakodesh Boruch Hu and Moshe Rabbeinu.

The Sfas Emes Z”L asks how is this possible, how can we see a sound?

Answers the Sfas Emes that to appreciate this, we need to understand the differing characteristics of seeing and hearing.

When one sees an object, the object and stimulus remains external to the viewer and is not incorporated within the person.

On the other hand, when one hears a sound, it is internalized and becomes one with the person.

At Har Sinai, says the Sfas Emes, when Hashem said the words  “Ohnochi Hashem Elokecho”  Bnai Yisroel saw their shoresh chiyuso and as a part of their ‘Nishmas Hashem’ that resides within every Jewish soul, the Mahus of every Jew, the “Pintele Yid”. Their response was “Na’aseh, Ve’Nishmah!”, the external actions required to fulfill Mitzvos became internalized and woven into the Neshamah of every Yid.

How is Emunah acquired asks Harav Gamiliel HaKohen Rabinowitz, Shlita. By constantly speaking of Emunah; the external of speech will internalize and make it a part of us. Rav Gamliel brings the Posuk:

“He’Emanti Key Adahber Le’ma-an Tesaper B’oznei Bincho U’ben Bincho Es Ahsher His’ahlalti Be’Mitzrayim Ve’Es Ohsosei Ahsher Samti Bom Vee’Datem Key Ani Hashem.”

Emunah is strengthened by constantly speaking of it, “He’Emanti Key Adahber…” to the point where it becomes part of you.

Reaching The Heavens!

In our modern generation, we are consumed with a desire to hold the entire World in the palm of our hand! In a flash, we know what is doing in China and what styles they are wearing in Paris. We pick up a phone and we are connected in an instant to a relative on the other side of the globe!  ‘De’iah’ – knowledge is a form of control. When we learn something new, when we visit a new place, travel great distances, we feel as though we have conquered and achieved a certain measure of control. Why are we conditioned this way?

There is a concept in physics, that no matter how many times a certain element is manipulated and re-formed into new creations, it can always be reversed back to its original state. Chazzal teach us that Adam Harishon, the first human being was as tall as the entire World! – “Misof Ha’olam ad Sofo”! His feet were on the ground and his head literally and figuratively, reached the heavens! He dabbled in lofty pursuits and lived with Hashem! However, after he sinned, Hashem cut him down to size and “minimized” him. Subsequently and for all time, the Human race was destined to become smaller and weaker in physical and spiritual stature! However, our intrinsic characteristic which is part of our genetic makeup, is to reach from the Earth up to the Heavens above! This internal quality, is the reason that we feel so restricted when we are confined to a small space (Jail, etc.) A chicken never feels restless in his small chicken coop! However, a Human being feels like he needs to ‘see the World’ and experience the entire World in the palm of his hand! We are merely exchanging the dimension of our already internal makeup! Instead of striving to reach the Heavens with lofty pursuits (and recognizing that in so doing, we are experiencing quite literally – the beauty of the entire World – Hashem!), we have simply fallen flat on our faces and have re-invented our intrinsic quality of “Misof Ha’olam ad Sofo”, to reach from one side of the world to another – horizontally!

Take Shabbos as an example. For those who lack an appreciation of what Shabbos means and how it nourishes and enriches our lives, it is like a day spent in Jail! So many restrictions and limitations!! Like death itself! We want to ‘travel’, to turn on the radio, the tv, ……we wish to see “what’s doing in the world”..but alas, we cannot! This frustration stems from the fact that we are living our misof ha’olam ad sofo in the horizontal position! We have fallen on our faces!

Get up and reach the Heavens!! Live a Shabbos in the embrace of Hashem! Throw away the newspapers and televisions for a day (at least) and see how you can conquer the entire universe by living with the Creator of the Universe!!

We have no time to be mechanech our children today! We are always angry with our children. We know how to tell them don’t do this, don’t do that…we reproach them and admonish them when they do something bad….we are perfectly reactive parents! How about being mechanech them properly in the first place, to  teach them what is right and what is wrong, instead of simply punishing them when they do something wrong!

My Wife is a Principal and Mechaneches in the girls school where we live in Ofakim. She came home one day and told me about a girl in school who was chutzpadik to her teacher. She asked me for advice on how to deal with the situation. I asked her for clarification and said, are you looking to punish this girl? She told me she was indeed looking to punish her. Well, I said, – if you are looking to punish her for being chutzpadik, why don’t you just take a knife and cut out her tongue! Of course my Wife replied that this was not what she had in mind! So I said to her, if you are asking me for my advice, then I would tell you that a better method than leveling punishment, is to actually teach her what it means to be refined in ones speech and not to be chutzpadik! Therefore, my advice is that for the moment you should do absolutely nothing. Instead, devote time in the coming days to talk to the girls about speaking properly. Then, if she should speak chutzpadik again after that, you can worry about punishing her!

Hashem tells Moshe Rabbeinu, “Matana Tova Yesh Li Bebais Genozai, V’Shabboss Shemo”… I have a treasure (for you) in my storage house and his name is Shabboss!

We know that there are two different separations with respect to the exclusivity of Shabboss Kodesh.

When Shabboss goes away, we say Hamavdil bein Kodesh Lechol (he who separates between the Holy and mundane). However, when Shabboss gives way to Yom Tov or visa versa (Holiday Festival), we say Hamavdil Bein Kodesh L’Kodesh. (he who separates between the Holy and Holy).

This would seem to imply that there is even a quantifiable difference between the Kedusha of Shabboss and the Kedusha of Yom Tov.

How is this defined?

We know that every Chag (Holiday) has its own “personality”. Indeed, the name of the Chag actually defines its essence. “Pesach”…al shem “shepasach Hashem’…G-d passed over etc. Sukkos..Chanuka..etc. Each Yom Tov has a beautiful and specific personality which it is defined by and which is alluded to in its name. The same is true for Shabbos. Shabbos also has a unique personality which is exclusive and unrivaled. This personality makes it dinstinguishable from all other Yom Tovim and with its own Kedusha, to the point where we actually divide and distinguish the Kedusha of Shabbos from the Kedusha of Yom Tov. Indeed, the personality of Shabbos is also alluded to in its name.

Shabboss is derived from the word “Shovas”.

Shovas, literally translated, means “nothing”. During the 6 days of creation, Hashem toiled to create this beautiful and majestic world…and on the seventh day he rested..complete…”Shovas”.

What happens when you strip the entire world of all of its trappings and external characteristics? What then remains?…HASHEM!! As it says “Venisgav Hashem L’vado Bayom Hahu”…Hashem remains alone…as one constant of creation…always was and always will be…

This is the beauty of Shabboss that separates it from all other days, both holy and mundane.

On Shabboss, we are meant to live with Hashem ALONE for a 24 hour period and bask in his glory. There is nothing else, only Hashem. Our work is left behind, our mundane activities are left behind even the holiness and personality of the Yomim Tovim are left behind….what remains is what will always remain; Hashem Echad Ushemo Echad!
