Take a glance at Adam Harishon. He had everything! The perfect human being, born into a perfect set of circumstances! No genetics to worry about. No hereditary pre-dispositions… he “had it made”!

However, just a few minutes into his creation, he is enticed to sin…and the rest is history! As a result of Adams’ sin and to this day (and until the end of time), we are destined to earn our bread by “the sweat of our brow”. Our women must endure unspeakable (labor) pains to bring children into this world..etc.

Adam realized full well, the  havoc he had caused and clearly understood the ramifications of his actions. He also recognized how much he had angered Hashem and that he had repaid Hashems’ kindness with sin. Chazzal teach us that at the end of his first full day on Earth (Friday), Adam saw the sun begin to set. He had never before witnessed such a phenomena! He literally saw the sun begin to go down and he thought to himself….Look what I have caused!!! I have literally caused the world to be destroyed! This beautiful world which Hashem created for my benefit and I have ruined everything with my sin! He could not be consoled and he wept.

However, he soon realized that Hashem was not destroying the world at all! Rather, Hakadosh Baruch Hu was ushering in the glory of Shabbos Kodesh!!! The very first Shabbos Kodesh of creation and the Holiest day of creation!

The lesson we learn from this is obvious.

From darkness comes light and night always gives way to day! Although we sometimes sin and hurt ourselves and our creator, it is never to late to pick up the pieces and move forward! We can always grow from our problems and sometimes our greatest accomplishments come on the heels of our failures!

There is always hope! Never despair!

Hashem tells Moshe Rabbeinu, “Matana Tova Yesh Li Bebais Genozai, V’Shabboss Shemo”… I have a treasure (for you) in my storage house and his name is Shabboss!

We know that there are two different separations with respect to the exclusivity of Shabboss Kodesh.

When Shabboss goes away, we say Hamavdil bein Kodesh Lechol (he who separates between the Holy and mundane). However, when Shabboss gives way to Yom Tov or visa versa (Holiday Festival), we say Hamavdil Bein Kodesh L’Kodesh. (he who separates between the Holy and Holy).

This would seem to imply that there is even a quantifiable difference between the Kedusha of Shabboss and the Kedusha of Yom Tov.

How is this defined?

We know that every Chag (Holiday) has its own “personality”. Indeed, the name of the Chag actually defines its essence. “Pesach”…al shem “shepasach Hashem’…G-d passed over etc. Sukkos..Chanuka..etc. Each Yom Tov has a beautiful and specific personality which it is defined by and which is alluded to in its name. The same is true for Shabbos. Shabbos also has a unique personality which is exclusive and unrivaled. This personality makes it dinstinguishable from all other Yom Tovim and with its own Kedusha, to the point where we actually divide and distinguish the Kedusha of Shabbos from the Kedusha of Yom Tov. Indeed, the personality of Shabbos is also alluded to in its name.

Shabboss is derived from the word “Shovas”.

Shovas, literally translated, means “nothing”. During the 6 days of creation, Hashem toiled to create this beautiful and majestic world…and on the seventh day he rested..complete…”Shovas”.

What happens when you strip the entire world of all of its trappings and external characteristics? What then remains?…HASHEM!! As it says “Venisgav Hashem L’vado Bayom Hahu”…Hashem remains alone…as one constant of creation…always was and always will be…

This is the beauty of Shabboss that separates it from all other days, both holy and mundane.

On Shabboss, we are meant to live with Hashem ALONE for a 24 hour period and bask in his glory. There is nothing else, only Hashem. Our work is left behind, our mundane activities are left behind even the holiness and personality of the Yomim Tovim are left behind….what remains is what will always remain; Hashem Echad Ushemo Echad!
